You can also find many great photography of New York (and more) in the LIFE Archives

This post was suppose to be an introduction to Jacob Riis‘s photography work from the 19th century using as subjects the deploring sanitary and health conditions in the New York tenement… I discovered his work trough a great book called ”How the other half lives” i happened to posses an old edition of the book with very fine printings! But… I change my mind and decided to show an other face of the city, more underground; at the time were graffiti and vandalism were at their apogee. (Some photos are dated from the 20’s but what did you expect i’m a vintage lover ; ) )

Enjoy
